Why Stinging Insects Are Dangerous

For most people a single sting is painful but not serious. The real danger is an allergic reaction: for someone who is sensitized, a wasp, hornet, or yellow jacket sting can trigger a severe, even life-threatening response that needs emergency care. Yellow jackets and hornets are also capable of stinging repeatedly, and a disturbed ground nest can send dozens of insects after you at once.

Carpenter bees pose a different threat. They rarely sting, but they tunnel into wood to build nesting galleries, and they return to the same wood year after year. Left alone, that damage compounds and can weaken decks, railings, fascia boards, and siding, while woodpeckers hunting the larvae make the holes worse.

When Stinging Insects Are Most Active

In the Carolinas, stinging insect activity ramps up in spring as queens emerge and start new nests, and it peaks in late summer and early fall when colonies are largest and most defensive. That late-season peak is when most stings happen, because a mature yellow jacket or hornet nest can hold thousands of insects. Treating a nest early in the season, while it is still small, is safer and easier than waiting until it is fully established. Carpenter bees appear earliest, often in April, when you may see them hovering around wooden eaves and decks.
